Wreck Gilda

On Sunday, July 5th we organize a full-day diving trip to the wreck Gilda. There are planned two dives. The embarking on the dive boat Manta Bianca will be at 9 am at Izola fishing pier. Gilda

The Austro-hungarian iron cargo steam ship with 859 GRT tonnage was built in the Stettin Vulcan Werft shipyard in 1881. In the period 1881~1907 the ship was named S/S Italia and the owner was the Ivers F.&Co.- Ivers Linie. The last owner odf the ship was the Austro Americana Soc. Di Nav. (Schenker, Burrell & Sohn) from Triest.  The cargo S/S Gilda, loaded with magnesite and equipment at Triest, ran aground and then hit a mine 3,5 nautical miles WNW of Point Savudrija on June 23rd 1915. Gilda sank in three minutes time, but without loss of life. The wreck lies at a depth of 28 meters.  Having hit an underwater mine the hull is split in two and rests upright 50 m apart embedded in mud. The lenhgt of the wreck is 70 m and the width 9 m.
